Brentford’s €48m chase for Lens star as Henderson exits

Premier League side Brentford FC are in advanced talks with French club RC Lens to secure defensive midfielder Mamadou Sangaré for €48 million, a deal confirmed on Tuesday via L’Equipe and intended to replace departing England international Jordan Henderson, who is set to join Chelsea.

The 24‑year‑old Malian international has been described as one of Ligue 1’s best midfielders last season. His performances helped Lens secure a place in the Champions League race.

Sangaré also played a vital role in Lens’ maiden Coupe de France triumph. His midfield presence was central to the club’s push for European qualification.

Brentford have been preparing for the loss of Henderson, who will move to Chelsea. The Bees view Sangaré as the ideal replacement to preserve midfield quality in the Premier League.

According to L’Equipe, the two clubs have held discreet discussions for weeks and an agreement is now close to being finalised. Both parties appear ready to conclude the €48 million transfer.

Crystal Palace, led by former Lens manager Pierre Sage, could still outbid the London‑based side for Sangaré. The competition adds pressure on Brentford to act swiftly.

Brentford must now move quickly to complete the €48 million deal for Sangar before any competing offer materialises, ensuring the Bees secure the midfielder ahead of the new season. A timely signing would allow the club to plan its Premier League campaign with the new midfielder in place.
