Brentford chase £40m profit‑driven rescue with Diouf

Brentford have identified a defensive void after a solid start to the Premier League season, prompting them to secure 21‑year‑old Senegal left‑back El Hadji Malick Diouf, whose £35 million base fee – rising to £40 million with add‑ons – promises to bolster a back line that West Ham have left behind.

Diouf has been the Bees' priority defensive target this window, but discussions stalled over the summer before reopening this week.

Brentford have reached a verbal agreement with West Ham to sign the defender in a deal worth up to £40 million, an initial £35 million plus £5 million in add‑ons. West Ham have accepted the bid and Diouf has been cleared to have a medical.

The clearance means the transfer can proceed once the medical is completed, removing the final procedural hurdle.

Diouf featured 34 times for West Ham last season, providing five assists, and played in the Hammers' Championship opener against Burnley before being omitted from the matchday squads of the Hammers' past two games.

His sale represents a substantial profit for West Ham, who paid £19 million for him a year ago when he arrived from Slavia Prague.

After breaking into the Senegal side last year, Diouf appeared four times at the World Cup this summer, adding international experience to his profile.

He could become Brentford's fifth summer signing after striker Callum Wilson, midfielder Mamadou Sangare, centre‑back Jannik Schuster and winger Jaidon Anthony. Brentford finished ninth last season under Keith Andrews, missing European football on goal difference, and began this campaign with a 3‑0 win over Tottenham Hotspur before facing Leeds.
