Brentford break record to land Lens star Mamadou Sangare
Brentford have completed the signing of Mali midfielder Mamadou Sangare from Lens for a club‑record fee, securing the 24‑year‑old on a five‑year contract with an optional sixth year. The deal, confirmed on Thursday, follows Sangare’s standout season in which he helped Lens finish second in Ligue 1 and capture the Coupe de France.
The club’s announcement featured a Getty ImagesImage caption noting Sangare’s contribution to Lens’s historic cup win. Head coach Keith Andrews said the club had been monitoring Sangare for some time and was eager to secure his services. He praised the midfielder’s development after several loan spells and his consistently high performances for a Lens side that finished second in the league.
Andrews also highlighted Sangare’s importance to the Mali national team, where he has become a key player. The 24‑year‑old earned 16 caps and featured at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Sangare made 33 appearances for Lens last season, contributing to their second‑place Ligue 1 finish and their first‑ever Coupe de France triumph. His season followed a career that began at Red Bull Salzburg, included loan periods, and a move to Rapid Vienna after impressive displays for Hartberg.
The transfer fee has not been disclosed, but Brentford confirmed it exceeds the £42.5 million paid for Dango Ouattara when he joined from Bournemouth last summer.
Sangare signed a five‑year deal with Brentford, with an option to extend for a further year. He told Andrews he is eager to join the club, describing himself as a humble yet determined player.
Andrews believes Sangare embodies the qualities Brentford seeks on and off the pitch and expects him to become very popular with the supporters. The midfielder’s arrival adds depth to Brentford’s midfield as they look to build on recent successes.
