Bradley Barcola Arsenal move sparks doubts at Liverpool

Bradley Barcola completed a £123 million transfer to Liverpool in the summer, leaving Arsenal as the club he turned down. The 24‑year‑old French winger, praised for his blistering pace, has already featured for three matches, totalling 158 minutes at Anfield, prompting early criticism.

Liverpool pursued Barcola to add elite speed to a forward line that has already splurged on Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. Club officials believed his quickness could stretch defences, yet the consensus is that pace alone will not solve their attacking woes.

Analysts question his suitability

Former player Paul Merson said, “He’s quick, but you don’t really have to be the fastest man in the Premier League – you need a bit more.” He added that Liverpool needed “someone with more guile” and warned Barcola would have “his games” but might still fall short.

Pat Nevin was even harsher, describing Barcola as “staggeringly, stupidly, ridiculously fast” but noting his vision “is not at that level”. Nevin argued that without space to run into, especially against low‑block teams, Barcola’s speed could become a liability.

The winger’s record at Paris Saint‑Germain includes 76 goal contributions across three seasons, yet the lower tolerance at Anfield, amplified by the under‑whelming starts of Isak and Wirtz, means he will not be afforded the same patience.

Two weeks ago pundits argued Arsenal should have signed Barcola instead of Liverpool. Now Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta appear to be counting their blessings that the Frenchman is not on their roster.

For Liverpool, the £123 million outlay now faces immediate scrutiny, while Arsenal’s missed opportunity highlights the fine margins in the Premier League transfer market.
