Bowen's winner propels West Ham to Championship summit

West Ham moved to the top of the Championship after a five‑goal thriller at Bolton, where skipper Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring early and added a late winner. It was their third straight league win, the first such run since December 2023. Chief reporter at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, Published 3 minutes ago, noted the night’s significance.

Bowen's winner fuels West Ham's resurgence

Bowen’s opening goal arrived early, setting the tempo for the encounter. His late winner capped a five‑goal thriller that left Bolton reeling.

The atmosphere was captured by Getty Images, with the Image source showing Bowen celebrating his winner as the travelling contingent of 4,500 supporters cheered from the stands. After the final whistle many fans lingered, delaying their departure into the night.

The result propelled West Ham to the summit of the Championship, overtaking rivals on equal points. It also marked the club’s third straight league win, a sequence not achieved since December 2023.

The win follows a turbulent period that saw a contract offer to former manager David Moyes go unsigned and later withdrawn before his departure six months later. The club’s decline continued, culminating in relegation last May.

Former chairman David Sullivan was absent from Bolton, though he has attended every home game this season. Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky has agreed to become the largest shareholder with a 46 percent stake, while Sullivan is set to retain 40 percent under a complex agreement.

Kretinsky will assume the chairmanship, and chief executive Karim Virani has been praised for engaging with supporters. Director of football Nils Koppen now has greater influence in recruitment, which this summer saw twelve players sold and nine brought in, including a record £22 million fee for Arne Engels and a £10 million signing of Norway’s young talent Edvin Austbo.

Visiting supporters sang repeatedly about former chairman David Sullivan, none of the chants being complimentary. Despite the upheaval, West Ham’s fans remained vocal and supportive, staying after the match to celebrate their team’s resurgence.
