Bournemouth splurge on Portuguese defender Silva to fill Senesi void
AFC Bournemouth have completed the signing of 22‑year‑old Portuguese centre‑back Antonio Silva from Benfica in a deal that could rise to £25.7 million, a decisive step as the Cherries prepare for the Premier League campaign after a swift pursuit to replace the departing Marcos Senesi.
Marcos Senesi departed on a free transfer to Tottenham earlier this month, leaving a clear gap in Bournemouth’s back line. The Cherries moved quickly to secure a replacement, targeting a defender with top‑flight experience.
Antonio Silva has been a regular at Benfica since breaking into the first team in 2022. He has already featured in the Champions League, the Europa League and the Club World Cup, gaining experience at the highest levels of European competition.
Club sources confirmed the agreement was reached only after Benfica’s Europa League qualifying‑round win over Swiss side St Gallen on Thursday, underscoring the timing of the transfer.
The fee is structured with an initial £21.4 million plus £4.3 million in add‑ons, bringing the total potential outlay to £25.7 million.
President of football operations Tiago Pinto said, “He is a player we have admired for a long time and we are delighted to welcome him. Despite being only 22, he has already built an outstanding level of experience at one of Europe’s biggest clubs, playing consistently in domestic, European and international competitions.”
Silva told the club’s website, “I am very happy to be here. It is a pleasure to play for Bournemouth and in the Premier League. I can’t wait to start the season with my teammates and I will play for the fans.”
The signing gives Bournemouth a proven defender to shore up the centre‑back position and should help the Cherries aim for a solid start to their Premier League season. For Silva, the move offers the chance to test himself in England’s top flight, following his teammate Alvaro Rodriguez’s earlier arrival from Elche in a deal also reported to be worth up to £25.7 million.
