Bournemouth’s unwanted record deepens after Saturday draw at Newcastle

Bournemouth’s 2‑2 draw at Newcastle on Saturday left them with just two points and cemented an unwanted Premier League record – the first side ever to open three fixtures by scoring first and still fail to win any in the opening month of the campaign.

Early dominance and lost lead

The Cherries silenced St James’ Park after just nine minutes when Marcus Tavernier tapped home from close range. Ten minutes before the interval a bizarre own goal from Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw gave Bournemouth a further cushion. A Getty photograph captured the chaotic moments surrounding the own goal. Two minutes later Harvey Barnes’ superb curling effort reduced the arrears.

Jacob Ramsey rescued a point for the Magpies with a late strike, leaving the visitors level at 2‑2. Bournemouth’s inability to hold on to their lead means they have become the first team ever to score first in all three opening Premier League fixtures and fail to win any of them.

Rose vows improvement after unwanted record

The draw means Bournemouth have collected only two points from a possible six, despite being in a strong position to take maximum points from all three games. Since the start of last season they have dropped the joint‑most points from winning positions in the Premier League – twenty‑nine, level with Newcastle – and the most away points lost, eighteen. Marco Rose’s side had previously raced into a 1‑0 lead at Manchester City before losing 2‑1, and Alex Scott had given the Cherries the lead at home to Everton only for James Tarkowski’s leveller to force a draw in added time. Each match saw the lead evaporate in the final ten minutes.

Rose praised the first‑half display, saying, “We started really well. We played a top first half. Our pressing was impressive,” and added that the opponents had no solutions.

He admitted the second half slipped, noting, “In the second half, we dropped a bit in everything. Even though we didn’t get real trouble in our box, we conceded again a late goal.” He said the team must work on defensive details in the coming days.

Rose concluded that the side must secure their first Premier League win soon, adding, “We should go for our first win in the Premier League to calm down this kind of talk,” and promised to address the issues in training ahead of the next match.
