Bournemouth’s Europa surge leaves Milan reeling while English clubs stumble

Bournemouth’s 3‑0 triumph over a ten‑man AC Milan at the Vitality Stadium not only marked a spectacular debut in the Europa League but also secured the Cherries a commanding position in the competition, underscoring English clubs’ mixed fortunes across Europe.

Milan reduced to ten men

Mike Maignan, the Milan goalkeeper and captain, swiped at James Hill’s face during a corner, conceding a penalty and earning a red card that left the Italian giants with ten players for more than an hour. Substitute goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani entered and immediately saved the ensuing penalty from Marcus Tavernier. The dismissal crippled Milan’s defence and forced them onto the back foot for the remainder of the match.

Bournemouth pressed relentlessly from the first minute, with Evanilson’s early crosses testing the Milan back line. A VAR review confirmed a handball by Koni De Winter, granting the home side a penalty which Justin Kluivert converted into the opening goal.

Adli’s free‑kick adds the finishing touch

Marcus Tavernier doubled the lead from the spot before half‑time, putting the Cherries firmly in control. In the second half, Amine Adli curled a magnificent free‑kick into the top corner, sealing a 3‑0 victory. Late in the game, Rayan’s header was denied by Torriani, preventing a fourth goal for Bournemouth.

Despite the dominance, Milan managed only three goals and were unable to mount a comeback, highlighting the gap between the seven‑time European champions and the newly promoted English side.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Brighton each earned points in their respective European fixtures. Palace drew 2‑2 with Besiktas in Istanbul, with Jean‑Philippe Mateta scoring on his first start and Wilfred Ndidi opening the scoring for the hosts. Sunderland secured a point in the Europa League, while Brighton did the same in the Conference League.

Broad sport coverage spans the weekend

The roundup also featured Soccer, LOI, Rugby, Golf, Racing, the League of Ireland, Horse Racing, Boxing, Motorsport, Athletics, NFL, NBA, Live, Video, Review and Podcasts. Extra, Football, Family and Stories sections highlighted Séamus Power four off the lead after a late slip in Bermuda, Celtic sunk by Celta Vigo as European woes continue, and Wayne Rooney’s quip “They’re like babies” after the United calamity. The BOURNEMOUTH banner underscored the club’s rising profile.

Looking ahead, Bournemouth will aim to build on this performance as they continue their Europa League campaign, hoping the momentum carries them deeper into the tournament.
