Borussia Dortmund’s confidence boost hides Justin Lerma’s mixed debut
Borussia Dortmund’s 3‑1 pre‑season triumph over Rot‑Weiß Oberhausen gives the Black and Yellows a confidence boost, yet the mixed debut of 18‑year‑old newcomer Justin Lerma underlines both his promise and the growing pains he must overcome to become a first‑team regular.
Borussia Dortmund opened their pre‑season with a 3‑1 win over Rot‑Weiß Oberhausen. Despite Oberhausen taking the early lead, the Black and Yellows turned the match around to secure the victory.
The comeback was sparked by new signing Justin Lerma, who in the closing stages of the first half started a move, made a strong run and finished well to level the score at 1‑1. The goal earned him plaudits from both the fans and his coach.
Nevertheless, Lerma’s overall display showed signs of inexperience. He struggled under pressure, gave away possession and failed to find a comfortable position on the pitch.
He also rarely offered a passing option to teammates and was frequently marked by Oberhausen players. Lerma was substituted at halftime, meaning his performance can only be judged on the first‑half minutes.
In the second half, Japanese midfielder Takato Yamamoto impressed with a well‑taken goal and a brilliant overall performance, stealing the headlines that had been focused on Lerma before the match.
Coach Niko Kovac has confirmed that Lerma remains a key part of his plans and is expected to develop into a creative force for Dortmund.
