Bookmakers slash Michael Carrick’s sack odds after United’s cup exit

Pressure is mounting on Michael Carrick at Old Trafford after Manchester United’s 3‑2 Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton, leaving the Red Devils 13th in the Premier League and prompting bookmakers to slash his sack odds and raising doubts over his ability to reverse the club’s early-season slump.

The Carabao Cup third‑round tie ended 3‑2 in Brighton’s favour after the Seagulls overturned a 2‑1 deficit. United’s comeback attempt fell short, confirming their exit from the competition.

Manchester United sit 13th in the Premier League, having collected just four points from their opening four matches. The early cup loss leaves the Red Devils with fewer opportunities to compensate for a sub‑standard start.

Betting market reacts

Sky Bet now lists Carrick at 10/3 to be the next Premier League manager to depart, a sharp fall from the 33/1 odds that opened the season. The former Middlesbrough boss was priced at 11/1 at the start of September and 15/2 before Wednesday’s elimination.

Odds for a dismissal before Christmas have slipped to 5/2, while a sacking before the end of September or during October stands at 6/1. November presents the shortest window for his exit, with odds of 7/2.

Sky Bet also offers 10/1 that Man United will lose their next two league games against Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur. Longer‑term bets see a 50/1 chance of four straight defeats, a 100/1 chance of five, and a 2/1 chance that Carrick will survive to the season’s end.

Supporters’ patience is wearing thin after Carrick was beaten in the Manchester derby last weekend. With United drifting away from the top‑four race, the upcoming fixtures will test whether he can stabilise the ship or become the latest casualty at Old Trafford. United travel to Fulham on Sunday 20 September, with kick‑off scheduled for 4:30 pm. Their next league match follows the September‑October international break, hosting Tottenham Hotspur on 10 October.

The outcomes of those two games will largely determine Carrick’s immediate future at the club. A win could buy him breathing space, while further defeats may accelerate the push for his dismissal.
