Boogaard’s Texel roots guide his Eredivisie loan from AZ

Boogaard grew up in Den Burg, the unofficial capital of Texel, where his parents and grandparents still live. His childhood bedroom has changed little despite his professional progress.

“If we have two days off, which does not happen often, then I go back. Just home, to my parents and my sister. That gives me peace,” he explains, describing the rare breaks that allow him to return to the island.

While on loan at Willem II, his schedule is lighter on Texel, meaning he sees his friends less often. “Actually being together on Texel does not happen very often any more. Fortunately you can text, that makes contact easier,” he says.

He receives messages not only from friends but also from former mentors. “Nice, when you hear that people are proud of you,” Boogaard adds.

Regular contact includes Marcel Ris, his last trainer at Texel ‘94, and Zijm, who alongside Martin Koorn was one of his two predecessors. “When I was in the AZ youth, he was the trainer there. Since then we text occasionally. Nice that we both come from Texel. He wants to help me and sometimes gives tips,” Boogaard notes.
