Bonmatí’s personalised plan aims to see her back for Barcelona’s Champions clash

Under the bright lights of the Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona’s midfield maestro Aitana Bonmatí spoke candidly about a lingering injury that has kept her off the pitch for months. The 28‑year‑old confirmed that a bespoke rehabilitation programme, devised with the club’s medical staff, is now guiding her return. While no exact date has been set, she hinted that the Arsenal Champions League tie on 11 November could be her first competitive appearance.

Recovery timeline and recent activity

Bonmatí missed five months after a serious setback late last season, only re‑entering match action in May. She featured in seven Barcelona games at the close of the previous campaign, including a substitute cameo in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final against OL Lyonnais. Summer saw her earn two caps for the Spanish national team against England and Iceland, but persistent pain prompted a cautious start to the new season.

Medical examinations now show the injury is in good condition, yet the player admits pain still limits everyday activities. “I suffered a serious injury last season,” she told, “all the tests say everything is perfect, but there are things you can’t control, like the pain. It limits me… I was tired of living with the pain, not only on the training ground but in my daily life.”

Individualised plan and future ambitions

Together with Barcelona, Bonmatí has crafted an individualised plan aimed at returning without jeopardising her long‑term career. She stressed that the programme is not linked to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, despite the tournament’s importance for Spain. “I’m not doing this for the World Cup. Of course it matters to me and the team, but the precautions are about ensuring a long, pain‑free career,” she added.

The midfielder acknowledged uncertainty about a completely pain‑free comeback, saying, “I don’t know if I’ll return without any pain, I don’t know if it’s possible, but that’s what we’re working on. We’re moving in a good direction, I’m not the same as before.”

Looking ahead, Bonmatí has two high‑profile fixtures pencilled into her calendar: Barcelona versus Real Madrid on 4 October and the Champions League clash with Arsenal on 11 November at the Camp Nou. “I hope to be back before the Arsenal match,” she said. “Playing Champions games at the Camp Nou is always special… I never say never. I hope to return and be available for the game. I have no set date, but it isn’t far away.”

While the exact return date remains undefined, the player confirmed that rehabilitation work is progressing positively and that important moments are approaching for both club and country. She reiterated her commitment to reaching peak physical and footballing condition before the season’s decisive encounters.
