Boniface's surge fuels Leverkusen comeback hopes in friendly

Victor Boniface's impact in Bayer Leverkusen's 3‑1 pre‑season friendly win over Kickers Offenbach on Saturday underscores his growing comeback case, as the Nigerian striker entered at half‑time and immediately injected dynamism into the attack. He appeared agile, operated in tight spaces and helped set up both second‑half goals, signalling a return to form after a difficult loan spell.

Boniface entered the match at the interval and instantly added greater dynamism to Bayer Leverkusen's attack. His presence altered the tempo, giving the team a fresh impetus in the second half.

The 25‑year‑old displayed agility, operating effectively in tight spaces and repeatedly seeking to involve his teammates. His movement created openings that the side capitalised on.

Boniface was directly involved in both of Leverkusen's second‑half goals. He supplied Jonas Hofmann for the goal that put the Werkself ahead 2‑1, and later linked up with Hofmann again in the build‑up to the third.

In the third goal, Hofmann crossed for Afonso Moreira, who finished from close range. Boniface’s contribution was pivotal in the attacking sequence.

A near‑miss came in the 65th minute when Boniface combined with Moreira and Ezequiel Fernández, only for his central effort to be blocked shortly before reaching the target.

The performance followed a brace in Leverkusen's opening pre‑season victory over Sportfreunde Bamberg. After a disastrous loan at Werder Bremen, his market value dropped from €40 million to €5 million over roughly fifteen months due to injuries, fitness issues and off‑field distractions.

Managing director Simon Rolfes praised Boniface’s improved physical condition after the Bamberg friendly, while newly appointed head coach Carles Martínez stressed that the striker must continue rebuilding his fitness gradually.

Beyond attacking flair, Boniface showed defensive work rate and created two goals without selfishness. Christian Kofane, who headed the first‑half equaliser, remains another attacking option.

His display against Offenbach supplies another encouraging sign and strengthens his case for a prominent role in the coming campaign.
