Bolt Signs for Non-League English Football with Wythenshawe Veterans

Eight‑time Olympic gold‑medalist Usain Bolt has officially signed for Wythenshawe FC Veterans, the over‑35s Sunday League side that competes in the Cheshire Veterans League in Greater Manchester, marking a rare foray of a world‑record sprinter into non‑league English football community.

The amateur outfit is managed by former Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland, who has assembled an extraordinary lineup of former Premier League and international stars for the team.

Wythenshawe FC Veterans play in the over‑35s Sunday League division of the Cheshire Veterans League, representing Greater Manchester in a competition that sits outside the professional pyramid.

Past and present squad members collectively boast more than 1,800 top‑flight English league appearances, underscoring the depth of experience on the side.

Former Manchester City players Joleon Lescott and Nedum Onuoha, former Manchester United title winner Antonio Valencia, Leicester City Premier League winner Marc Albrighton, ex‑England striker Emile Heskey and former Newcastle forward Papiss Cissé have all featured for the Veterans.

Additional former professionals such as Maynor Figueroa, Jefferson Montero, Kieran Westwood, Paul McShane, Adrian Mariappa, Oumar Niasse and Martyn Waghorn also signed up for the current campaign.

Bolt’s move to non‑league football

Bolt, a lifelong Manchester United fan, previously attempted to break into professional football after retiring from athletics, notably training with Australian A‑League side Central Coast Mariners in 2018.

His official registration now appears on the FA Full‑Time registration system, although the club has not yet confirmed the date of his debut for the Veterans.
