Bohs' bid to narrow Rovers' lead stalls against spirited Galway

Colm Whelan converted his 10th penalty of the season to give Bohemians the lead, while man‑of‑the‑match Hugo Pires da Cunha kept Galway United in the game, leaving Bohs still unable to narrow the gap on leaders Shamrock Rovers.

Bohemians hosted Galway United hoping to chip away at Shamrock Rovers' advantage after a dramatic Thursday night victory over Ballkani. Alan Reynold’s side were back in the league after a 30‑day hiatus, adding extra urgency to the encounter.

Galway, with only one win in five recent outings, pressed early. Aaron Bolger arrived on a neatly worked set‑piece but missed his left‑footed volley, and Dayle Rooney’s wing‑back run was smothered by Da Cunha, denying the hosts a first‑minute lead.

The home side continued to dominate possession. Harry Vaughan unleashed a long‑range effort that whizzed past the post, while Douglas James‑Taylor’s point‑blank strike was blocked. Darragh Power also featured prominently in the midfield push.

A pivotal moment arrived when skipper Jimmy Keohane hauled down Cian Byrne in the box. In front of the expectant Des Kelly stand, Colm Whelan stepped up from 12 yards, sending the keeper the wrong way to restore Bohs’ advantage.

Aaron Bolger answered before the break, smashing home a powerful volley to level the score and force a share of the spoils. The half‑time whistle found the teams dead‑locked at one‑all.

The second half saw tempers flare as David Hurley appeared to kick out after a free‑kick, prompting a massive coming‑together. Substitute Jordan Flores earned a free‑kick just outside the box but failed to find the target, and despite the roar of 4,019 fans, Bohs could not find a winner. Hugo Pires da Cunha’s defensive heroics earned him the man‑of‑the‑match award, and the point left Bohs still trailing Shamrock Rovers.
