Boehly and Walter weigh exit as Clearlake tightens grip on Chelsea

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are weighing a sale of their Chelsea stakes while Clearlake Capital already controls 61.5% of the west London club, a contrast that highlights both a potential consolidation of ownership and lingering doubts about the club’s direction.

Sale origins and ownership split

American billionaire businessmen Boehly and Walter partnered with Clearlake to acquire the club from Roman Abramovich in a transaction mandated by the United Kingdom government in May 2022.

Clearlake Capital currently holds 61.5% of Chelsea, with Boehly and Walter carving up the remaining shares alongside fellow investor Hansjorg Wyss.

Dissatisfaction and valuation

Chairman Boehly has reportedly been dissatisfied with recent recruitment, head‑coach appointments and a proposed new stadium plan.

A subsequent Telegraph article suggested the duo believe Chelsea is worth £5 billion.

The move was first reported by the Financial Times, with the Telegraph later adding the valuation claim.

The Press Association has contacted Chelsea for comment.

The juxtaposition of a possible stake sale against Clearlake’s dominant shareholding underscores a pivotal moment for the club’s future ownership structure.
