Black Cats and Newcastle vie for Roma winger Matias Soule

Newcastle United and their North East rivals Sunderland are both circling Roma winger Matias Soule, the 23‑year‑old Argentina international who has sat on the Black Cats’ radar all summer. Sunderland made an approach in July, but Roma have yet to finalise a deal as the Tuesday transfer deadline looms.

Sunderland’s early pursuit

Sunderland’s scouting staff have monitored Soule throughout the summer, and the club lodged a formal approach in July. However, they could not reach an agreement with the Italian side at that stage, leaving the Argentine in Rome while Serie A assess his options.

The Black Cats have also kept tabs on other attacking prospects, notably Marseille’s Igor Paixao, and previously tried to sign Sporting winger Geny Catamo and Lyon forward Malick Fofana.

Newcastle joins the chase

Newcastle United entered the race later, adding Soule to their shortlist as manager Matthias Jaissle seeks to bolster his forward line before the window shuts. TEAMtalk confirms the Magpies have already discussed Lille star Matias Fernandez‑Pardo and Stuttgart midfielder Bilal El Khannouss, and now view Soule as a viable option.

Beyond the two North East clubs, several Premier League sides – Fulham, Everton and Brighton – have also shown interest, while AC Milan have been reported to hold talks about the Argentine.

Roma have considered retaining Soule, but their strategy is increasingly focused on acquiring fresh attacking reinforcements, a plan that could see the 23‑year‑old depart before Tuesday’s deadline.

With multiple English clubs circling and Sunderland remaining interested, the likelihood of Soule leaving the Eternal City grows each day as the transfer window draws to a close.
