Birmingham City turn to former academy star to shore up goalkeeping

Twenty‑nine‑year‑old goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley has signed for Birmingham City on a free transfer, the club announced in an official press release today, to reinforce the Blues’ goalkeeping department ahead of the upcoming Women’s Super League campaign after a season that exposed limited depth in the squad.

The Blues targeted Baggaley to add experienced cover between the posts as they prepare for the new WSL season. A campaign that revealed limited depth in goalkeeping options prompted the club to prioritise strengthening that position in its pre‑season assessments. The club is gearing up for a new WSL campaign.

Baggaley first joined Birmingham City at academy level and made her senior debut in May 2014, laying the foundation for her professional career. She spent four years in the Blues’ senior squad before departing for Bristol City in 2018.

After three seasons with Bristol City, she secured a two‑year spell at Manchester United, adding top‑flight experience. She then moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2023 and left the club earlier this summer.

Internationally, Baggaley has been on the periphery of the England senior squad in recent months, yet she still awaits her first senior cap for the Lionesses. Her inclusion in training camps reflects her standing among the country’s goalkeeping options.

"When you start your career somewhere, you always have a soft spot for it," Baggaley said. "Birmingham helped build the foundations for my career and hopefully now I can give a little bit back. The club has been through so many different stages over the last few years, but it’s clear how much Birmingham has invested in the women’s team and I’m really excited to be part of that."
