Big controversy: Granit Xhaka excluded after fake Covid-19 certificate

Granit Xhaka, Sunderland captain and a mainstay of the Swiss national team, admitted on Monday morning on Instagram that he had obtained a fake Covid-19 vaccination certificate a few years ago. In response, the Swiss Football Federation decided to exclude him from the first four matches of the Nations League (Division B). This decision, announced the same day, affects the fixtures against North Macedonia, Scotland, Slovenia and Wales.

Public acknowledgment and apologies

In his message, Xhaka explained that fear and doubt surrounding the vaccine had led him to “buy a vaccination certificate” rather than follow the official procedure. He said: “It was a mistake. I regret it. I take responsibility for this decision and I am fully cooperating with the competent authorities.”

Judicial investigation in Lucerne

Lucerne police confirmed, via the DPA news agency, that an investigation has been opened concerning both the player and the doctor who allegedly issued the fake document. Swiss authorities indicated that Xhaka will submit to this investigation and will cooperate with the investigators.

According to the Swiss daily Blick, Xhaka is said to have contracted Covid-19 in 2021 and early 2022, then received the certificate from his doctor without actually being vaccinated. This revelation sparked a wave of criticism in the sports media and within the football community.

The Swiss Football Federation’s statement clarifies that Xhaka will no longer be available for the first four Nations League (Division B) matches against North Macedonia (26 September and 6 October), Scotland (29 September) and Slovenia (3 October). The decision was made “by mutual agreement” during a meeting between the player and the leadership of the Swiss Football Association (SFA).

The scandal was also illustrated by images released by Getty Images, showing Xhaka during a Sunderland training session, highlighting the link between professional football and the health requirements imposed since the pandemic.

This case raises questions about transparency and the responsibility of athletes regarding health requirements. The term “Sports” appears in official statements, underscoring the impact of the controversy on the entire football sector.
