Bierhoff sees Wirtz's mega-club in Barcelona and stresses his class
In the studio of the programme “The State of the League”, Oliver Bierhoff, the former DFB chief, talks about Florian Wirtz, the 23‑year‑old international who is still under a long‑term contract with FC Liverpool. The former coach attributes a spectacular new mega‑club – FC Barcelona – to the young attacking player.
Bierhoff's Vision: Barcelona as Wirtz Mega‑Club
Bierhoff explains that he can well imagine Wirtz at Hansi Flick's Barcelona. “I would see him well, for example at Hansi Flick's Barcelona. There he has space, there he has great footballing teammates,” he said in the interview.
He emphasizes that the Catalans' style of play and Flick's tactical concept would suit the 23‑year‑old. At the same time, Wirtz is suitable for several European top clubs, added the former international.
Wirtz's Career and Current Role at Liverpool
Florian Wirtz left Bayer Leverkusen last year and signed a long‑term contract with FC Liverpool. In England his development has so far not been consistently as successful as in the Bundesliga.
Under coach Andoni Iraola he plays a key role in the attacking midfield and is regularly in the squad, but the huge expectations have not yet been consistently fulfilled.
Nevertheless, Bierhoff continues to describe the German as an absolute world‑class player who must constantly demonstrate his quality. He demands of Wirtz that he consistently backs up his class with appropriate performances.
In the German national team kit, Wirtz most recently took on additional responsibility against Serbia (2‑0) and Greece (0‑0) and temporarily wore the captain's armband in Joshua Kimmich's absence.
Bierhoff's thought experiment does not, however, constitute a concrete transfer; Wirtz remains long‑term bound to Liverpool and there are no talks with Barcelona.
Thus the sporting future of the international remains for now at FC Liverpool, while the former DFB chief describes his possible future in Spain only as an idea.
