Betting markets freeze as Manchester City face unprecedented sanctions

Amid the quiet of the international break, the Premier League has been rocked by a verdict that sees Manchester City guilty of 114 of 115 financial regulation charges, prompting William Hill and PaddyPower to suspend betting on the Etihad side’s relegation. The odds on City’s title hopes have already slipped, underscoring the market’s shock.

Financial breach timeline

The Premier League alleged that Manchester City breached its financial regulations between 2009 and 2018, resulting in 115 charges. The club has now been found guilty of 114 of those charges, leaving only one unresolved. Potential punishments range from point deductions to huge fines, marking unprecedented sanctions.

Betting markets react to sanctions

Following the announcement that Manchester City breached Premier League financial rules, William Hill announced it has suspended betting on Man City being relegated this season. PaddyPower mirrored the move, halting similar wagers. The suspension reflects bookmakers’ assessment that relegation is now a plausible outcome.

Odds on the title race shifted sharply after the verdict. City’s odds fell from 5/4 to 7/4, while Arsenal’s improved to 4/6. Lee Phelps, spokesperson for William Hill, said: “Following the breaking news of Manchester City being found guilty on all but one of their 115 charges … we have suspended betting on them to be relegated this season.”

A Manchester City spokesperson told The Athletic that the Premier League process remains ongoing and that the club’s position stays consistent with its February 2023 statement, emphasizing respect for due process. Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand reacted bluntly, claiming another Premier League medal could be added to his cabinet. Pundit Richard Keys added, “It’s hard to argue differently. They cheated.”

The potential fallout extends beyond City. The Red Devils could claim two belated titles if Manchester City are stripped of their Premier League wins, and Liverpool might also lift an extra piece of silverware. The situation highlights how financial breaches can reshape the championship landscape.
