Betis gamble on Irish striker Troy Parrott amid risk‑reward debate
Troy Parrott is set to leave Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar for Spanish club Real Betis, with the transfer confirmed before the window closes and no fee disclosed. The 24‑year‑old Republic of Ireland striker will join a team that qualified for this season’s Champions League.
The news broke after teammate Mexx Meerdink unintentionally revealed the move over the weekend, confirming that Parrott’s departure was imminent.
Earlier transfer rumours linked Parrott with West Ham, a club hoping to secure an immediate return to the Premier League, but those reports have since faded.
Betis offers Champions League football
Real Betis, fresh from a fifth‑place finish in La Liga last season, will compete in the Champions League, providing Parrott with top‑level European exposure.
Betis recently defeated Arsenal in a pre‑season friendly at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium and are managed by former Real Madrid, Manchester City and Villarreal boss Manuel Pellegrini.
Analysts weigh risk and reward
RTÉ soccer analyst Alan Cawley called the move “a good one because of the manager that’s there – hugely experienced and will look after him,” adding that playing alongside stars like Isco and in the Champions League makes it attractive.
Former Ireland winger Keith Treacy warned that a change in environment could backfire, noting Parrott’s “big smile on his face playing for AZ” and the higher standard and lifestyle shift that might affect his confidence.
Cawley also expressed doubt about a West Ham switch, saying he was “always wary of the whole West Ham thing” due to the physical nature of English football, but believed Betis could reward Parrott financially while offering better football development.
Betis already have Colombian striker Cucho Hernández as a pure centre‑forward, meaning Parrott will face competition for minutes across the league, cup and Champions League fixtures.
For Parrott, the move promises Champions League action and a chance to prove himself under Pellegrini, while Betis gain a versatile Irish forward to bolster their attacking options at the end of a demanding season.
