Benfica's €20m gamble on Australian defender Circati

Benfica's €20m gamble on Australian defender Circati

Portuguese giants Benfica have agreed a €20 million deal with Parma to sign 22‑year‑old Australian centre‑back Alessandro Circati, sealing his move to Lisbon. The agreement follows personal terms already settled and sees the former Parma youth product, who debuted in 2022, depart for the Portuguese capital.

World Cup form drives Benfica interest

Circati’s performances at this summer’s World Cup with Australia attracted interest from several major European clubs. Benfica moved fastest, securing the defender after he helped Parma win promotion to Serie A in 2024 and made 33 appearances across all competitions last season. Parma supporters nicknamed him “Il Muro” (The Wall) for his defensive solidity.

Born in Fidenza, Italy, Circati was raised in Perth from the age of one. He chose to represent Australia over Italy, eventually captaining the Socceroos and becoming their youngest skipper since 1981.

According to Sky Sport, personal terms with Circati were already in place before the clubs settled on the €20 million fee. This cleared the way for his transfer to Lisbon.

The Australian defender came through Parma’s youth ranks and made his first‑team debut in 2022. He has since become one of Parma’s most important players.

A photo from April 18 in Udine, Italy, shows Arthur Atta of Udinese and Alessandro Circati of Parma in action during a Serie A match at Stadio Friuli. The image captures the defender’s presence in Italian football before his move.

Benfica’s €20 million investment gives the Portuguese side a young, World Cup‑tested centre‑back to bolster their defense. For Parma, Circati’s departure marks the loss of a key figure who helped secure promotion and featured heavily last season.
