Benfica exposes Milan's weaknesses: Amorim's first signs

Milan under Ruben Amorim suffered a 0-2 defeat against Benfica, while San Siro has recorded four defeats out of six since the end of April, signalling an evident crisis. The two sides met in a context where the Rossoneri’s difficulties have become increasingly apparent.

Already present signals

In recent matches the Rossoneri had managed to snatch a point against Juventus and against Lazio, but the warning signs had already emerged in the preceding weeks. Despite those results, the lack of continuity prevented turning the points into wins.

Milan gave away the first half, and in five league matches they have never managed to score in the first 45 minutes. This statistic highlights a difficulty in starting with offensive energy.

Amorim’s substitutions did not produce the desired effect; Gonçalo Ramos was forced to run in vain, unable to find playable balls. The constant rotation of players has prevented finding a stable line.

Benfica, despite having made a massive turnover, took control from the first minutes and earned the victory, the first success in the history of their eight meetings.

At the end of the match, Ruben Amorim said: “I am always worried, we are missing a lot of things”. Before kickoff he had already highlighted the lack of players suited to his style of play.

The contrast between Benfica’s ability to impose itself and Milan’s shortcomings makes it clear that Amorim’s problems are becoming increasingly visible, leaving the club in a delicate position for the upcoming challenges.
