Bellingham’s record‑breaking assists reignite talk of all‑time greatness

Jude Bellingham became the first England player since Trent Alexander‑Arnold’s November 2021 display against San Marino to record three assists in a single match, doing so in a 7‑0 Nations League demolition of Croatia at Stadion HNK Rijeka and signalling a new level in his game.

Record‑breaking assist haul

The 23‑year‑old not only supplied the hat‑trick of assists but also scored, wore the captain’s armband and helped England inflict the heaviest defeat in Croatia’s history. His contributions were pivotal as the Three Lions ran riot, with Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka each adding two goals and Anthony Gordon scoring and assisting. The performance marked the first time a player had been directly involved in more than two England goals in a game.

From squad doubt to World Cup hero

Just a year ago Bellingham’s place in the England squad was uncertain after Thomas Tuchel omitted him from the Three Lions squad in October 2025, the German head coach warning he would not receive star treatment. Despite that setback, he made the World Cup squad, finished as England’s top scorer with seven goals, and helped the team reach the semi‑finals before securing third place.

Praise from the greats

Former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder Roy Keane said on ITV, “Bellingham can go on to be one of the greatest players of all time… the package – his running power, his delivery, his goal threat.” Matt Upson, former England defender, added that Bellingham is “nailed on as the 10 for the future.” Ian Wright praised his relentless drive, while Bukayo Saka called him “amazing tonight” and “special”. Tuchel confirmed the performance felt like a step up, noting that players must constantly develop to stay ahead.

Real Madrid’s midfielder was also voted England’s player of the year for the second consecutive season, underscoring his growing stature on both club and international stages. His leadership was highlighted when Harry Kane was rested with 20 minutes left and Bellingham assumed the captain’s armband, a clear sign of his importance within the squad.

England’s front four shared the spotlight, with Kane moving to 89 caps to equal Peter Shilton’s appearance record and preparing to face the Czech Republic at Wembley on Tuesday. The upcoming match will test whether the momentum from the Croatia win can be sustained.

Overall, Bellingham’s triple‑assist night at Rijeka has reignited discussions about his potential to become one of football’s greatest, a narrative now backed by concrete achievements and widespread acclaim.
