Bell warns Hearts fans will rue Shankland exit after Graz collapse

A long throw that slipped straight into the net after four minutes set the tone in Tuesday’s Champions League qualifying clash between Hearts and Sturm Graz. Former Ibrox goalkeeper Cammy Bell called the goal "unacceptable at that level" and warned it would haunt the Scottish side.

The match was Hearts' first competitive test under new head coach Wouter Vrancken, with the Scottish Premiership runners‑up hoping to build momentum after a summer of change. Bell noted that the visitors paid for missed chances as the Austrians struck three times in a ten‑minute spell after the break.

Sturm Graz added a second goal in the 50th minute, prompting Bell to describe a ten‑minute collapse that left Hearts vulnerable. He said the team "almost collapsed for 10 minutes" and could not recover at the top level.

In total, the Austrians scored three goals within ten minutes of the second half, a period in which Hearts failed to convert several clear opportunities. Bell stressed that against quality opposition, failing to finish will inevitably hurt a side.

Bell also linked the disappointment to the summer departure of top scorer Lawrence Shankland to Rangers, reminding fans that the former Ibrox keeper had left a void in the attack. He highlighted how Hearts fans, accustomed to a strong defensive reputation, now see their side looking "really weak".

The former goalkeeper warned that Hearts supporters will remain frustrated, describing the defeat as "damaging" and predicting many similar moments throughout the season. He summed up the situation as an "uphill battle" with the tie effectively lost.

With the tie now beyond reach, Bell concluded that the season ahead looks challenging for Hearts, and the lingering regret over Shankland's exit will continue to echo in the stands.
