Belgian FA blocks Infantino support over Balogun controversy
"Federação Belga nega apoio a Infantino e relembra \"caso Balogun\"" the Royal Belgian Football Association announced it will not back Gianni Infantino’s bid for a new FIFA term, citing a lack of transparency and the disputed reversal of US striker Folarin Balogun’s red card.
The Belgian FA’s decision aligns it with Sweden, Scotland and Italy, all of which have also refused to endorse Infantino’s re‑election.
The association highlighted the “FIFA Forward Enterprise” project, saying key decisions and evaluations have not been justified with adequate explanations.
Central to the protest is the “Balogun case”, where FIFA cancelled the United States striker’s red card after a request from former President Donald Trump, allowing him to face Belgium in the World Cup round of 16.
Belgium subsequently defeated the United States 4‑1, with Balogun’s impact described as muted.
Despite the criticism, Infantino remains the sole candidate and is widely regarded as the overwhelming favourite to retain the FIFA presidency.
The Belgas positioned themselves contrary to Infantino’s candidacy, echoing the stance of Sweden, Scotland and Italy.
