Bayern Schalke crisis stops and SV Elversberg threatens promotion shock

It is precisely a newly promoted side that makes the record champion stumble: a 0:0‑draw in the Veltins Arena ignites the crisis at FC Bayern, ending after 67 matchdays the mega‑streak, the Munich side lose the league lead to Schalke and now face the sensationally promoted SV Elversberg – for some just a footnote.

Draw against Schalke ends the streak

The 0:0 in the Veltins Arena was not an ordinary draw. It came against Schalke's team, fighting selflessly under Miron Muslic's guidance. Through the draw the Munich side lost the league lead. The record champion had to admit defeat.

Before the match the Munich side had led the Bundesliga for 67 consecutive matchdays – a record of 67 matchdays. The 35‑time champion had therefore been undisputed at the top since the start of the season. The last league leader before this streak was 1. FC Heidenheim after two matchdays of the 2024/25 season.

Currently SC Freiburg leads the league from the very top. On Sunday FC Augsburg could take pole position if they defeat Eintracht Frankfurt. A win for Augsburg would push Bayern out of the Champions‑League places.

SV Elversberg as new promoted challenger

The upcoming opponent is the sensationally promoted SV Elversberg, who boast a 100‑percent win rate in the league. Bayern's last goalless draw was in February 2025 against champions Bayer Leverkusen. The team has scored seven goals in its first two games – a new record for Bundesliga newcomers since 1963/64. This is the first time a promoted side has scored seven goals in its second Bundesliga season.

Since the goalless draw against Bayer Leverkusen in February 2025, Bayern have scored 161 goals in 47 games, but the draw against Schalke was the first time since then without a goal of their own. In the same match Schalke put goalkeeper Loris Karius behind the bar, which further burdened the Munich side.

Whether the Munich side's crisis will continue remains uncertain. The weekend against Elversberg will decide whether Bayern can reclaim their top position.
