Bayern press on as Kompany leaves hospital but weeks before his return

Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital and is reported as “doing well” after his collapse at Bayern Munich’s training ground. The Belgian was rushed to hospital six days ago when he fell ill at the club’s base, and he continues to make strides on the road to recovery.

Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, told German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday that “Given the circumstances, he’s doing well” and confirmed the discharge that day. Doctors have identified the cause as meningeal irritation, an inflammation of the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

In the days before his collapse, Kompany had been battling a virus and missed several training sessions. He skipped the pre‑match news conference before Bayern’s Champions League tie with Arsenal last Tuesday, yet he was present in the dugout for that match.

Eberl later said ahead of Bayern’s German Cup tie with Magdeburg that the meningeal irritation caused the Friday incident and that Kompany will now rest and take medication. He added he is confident Kompany will be back on the touchline operating at 100 percent very soon.

Bayern press on without Kompany

Bayern have warned that Kompany will not return to the dugout for “weeks, not days”. In his absence, English assistant coach Aaron Danks took charge and led Bayern to a 3‑1 victory over Freiburg on Sunday.

The current league leaders Bayern Munich face title rivals Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Both sides are the only unbeaten teams in the division, each on 17 points, with Bayern sitting top on goal difference.

Harry Kane, the newly crowned Ballon d’Or winner, paid tribute to his Belgian manager during his award speech, wishing him a speedy recovery. Kane said: “To Vinnie… I wish you well, and I hope this has given you a bit of energy… I’m glad to be bringing this trophy back to Bayern.”
