Bayern Munich reject JJ Gabriel's seven‑figure wage ask as United saga unfolds

Bayern Munich reject JJ Gabriel's seven‑figure wage ask as United saga unfolds

JJ Gabriel, the 16‑year‑old who turned 16 on Tuesday, has learned that Bayern Munich will not meet his seven‑figure salary request, even as the German giants join the race to sign the Manchester United prodigy.

Why United need to replace a departing star

Manchester United have refused to cancel Gabriel’s contract, meaning he cannot join a domestic rival until his deal expires this summer. The club’s refusal follows a departure request lodged after his representatives demanded a senior debut in the Champions League against Sabah.

United had originally planned to hand the then‑15‑year‑old his first‑team bow against Brighton and Hove Albion, but his agents voiced a wish to leave on the night before that fixture.

Bayern’s stance and other suitors

Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga champions, have held initial talks with Gabriel’s family since May and are described as “serious” in their interest, with manager Vincent Kompany a keen admirer. Nevertheless, the club is reluctant to match the teenager’s wage demands.

Spanish powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid are also circling the 16‑year‑old, with Gabriel training in Castelldefels after his hat‑trick in United’s Youth League win against Sabah. Barcelona sporting director Deco has addressed the matter cautiously, aware of the delicate nature of such a transfer.

Financial and regulatory hurdles

Regulations allow Gabriel to move abroad thanks to his EU passport, whereas UK players must be 18 to transfer overseas. Reports suggest a European move could bring United a windfall of around £300,000, while a domestic transfer might command significantly more, as illustrated by Liverpool’s payment of over £2 million to Chelsea for Rio Ngumoha.

United are expected to offer Gabriel scholarship terms to satisfy compensation requirements, and any buying club will need to submit a formal FIFA request covering development, education and welfare obligations.

Opinions on his readiness

Former United defender Phil Bardsley told that Gabriel is not yet physically ready for Premier League football, citing the need for players to develop physically before being thrust into senior competition.

Wayne Rooney echoed a similar sentiment, noting the pressure on a 16‑year‑old and recalling his own debut at 16 years and 360 days.
