Bayern Munich linger on Florian Wirtz as Liverpool's faith wavers

Bayern Munich are keeping a close watch on Florian Wirtz’s situation at Liverpool, sources told TEAMtalk, saying the German club’s long‑standing admiration for the Germany international has not faded. If Liverpool’s faith in the midfielder dwindles, Bayern say they are ready to act.

Bayern’s earlier pursuit and the £116 million price tag

Bayern were serious admirers of Wirtz before his move to Anfield and remained firmly interested, but they were priced out when Liverpool agreed a £116 million deal for the midfielder in 2025. The fee proved prohibitive for the Bavarian giants, leaving them on the outside of the race.

Liverpool beat Manchester City to Wirtz’s signature, a move described as one of the biggest statements of their summer transfer business. The German arrived at Anfield alongside Alexander Isak, whose British‑record transfer underscored Liverpool’s ambition after their Premier League title win.

The Reds limped to a fifth‑place Premier League finish last season, a campaign that ultimately cost Arne Slot his position as head coach. The under‑whelming league performance prompted a swift managerial change.

Wirtz managed just five goals and three assists from 33 Premier League appearances, drawing criticism given the scale of his arrival and his reputation in Germany. His output fell short of the expectations that accompanied his £116 million price tag.

Wirtz’s struggle and Liverpool’s new direction

In the new campaign, the 23‑year‑old has contributed only one assist and has yet to score in his first five games. Andoni Iraola, now Liverpool’s head coach, has been tasked with unlocking the German’s best form.

Some within Liverpool question whether Wirtz can reach the extraordinary levels expected after such a significant investment, but there is no current suggestion of a sale. The club’s plan is to give Iraola the season to prove the midfielder can become a cornerstone of the project.

TEAMtalk understands Bayern remain firmly in the picture and continue to monitor developments closely. Their admiration for Wirtz has not diminished despite his difficult start in England.

Bayern had hoped to sign Wirtz before Liverpool won the race in 2025, but the financial demands proved prohibitive. Liverpool’s willingness to meet those demands was decisive, securing a player many regarded as the most sought‑after in world football at the time.

Liverpool’s immediate priority is to allow Iraola the time and resources to rebuild, with Wirtz remaining a major part of those plans. If the expected improvement does not materialise, his position will be revisited at the end of the season.
