Bayern Munich extends Christoph Freund's contract, Vincent Kompany satisfied

Bayern Munich officially announced on Wednesday the extension of the contract of its sporting director Christoph Freund until June 30 2029, ensuring to Vincent Kompany the continuity of a collaboration he describes as excellent. This decision fits within the Bavarian club’s strategy which, since Freund’s arrival in the summer of 2023, has already won two Bundesliga titles, the German Cup and two Super Cups.

Contract extension until 2029

The club’s statement indicates that the extension was signed on Wednesday, extending Freund’s mandate by several additional years. The agreement guarantees that the sporting director will remain in post until June 30 2029, thus providing stability to Bayern’s sporting management.

Christoph Freund, who arrived from Salzburg in the summer of 2023, quickly convinced the Bavarian management with his approach. His integration has been praised as a key factor in the sporting decisions made since his arrival.

A strengthened working relationship

Jan‑Christian Dreesen, chief executive of Bayern, was delighted with this extension: “Christoph Freund plays a central role in all sporting decisions and we are pleased that he will continue to work for Bayern Munich in the future. The successes of recent years are partly due to his excellent work. Christoph maintains an excellent working relationship with Vincent Kompany, he is very close to the team and, at the same time, keeps a keen eye on all sporting matters.”

Freund recalled the expectations placed on him when he joined Bayern Munich in 2023: he was to provide a significant impetus to the first team and propose a new approach to youth development as well as the link between the first team and the Campus. He believes he has largely met these expectations and says he is eager to continue developing the sporting department.

Since his arrival, the club has won two Bundesliga titles, the German Cup and two German Super Cups, demonstrating the positive impact of his leadership. These successes reinforce the club’s confidence in the continuity of its vision.

Freund expressed his great satisfaction: “I am very happy to be able to continue contributing to Bayern Munich’s development in the future. Bayern Munich is one of the biggest clubs in the world and, since my arrival, this role has become a true passion for me.”

He concluded by highlighting the exciting adventure shared with the team and Vincent Kompany, stating that it remains “extremely rewarding to work together here in order to continue bringing new impulses so that Bayern Munich stays exactly where supporters, and all of us, want to see it: at the very top.”
