Bayern eye Barcelona defender Kounde as January option
Bayern Munich are keeping a close eye on Barcelona defender Jules Kounde and could make a January move for the versatile French centre‑back, 27‑year‑old as a potential reinforcement for their back line.
The club have been interested in Kounde for some time and are weighing a signing to bolster their defence during the winter transfer window if they sell Kim Min‑jae.
Financial and tactical rationale
Kim Min‑jae, the South Korean centre‑back, is valued at around €40 million and Bayern have reportedly permitted him to find a new club. Selling him would generate funds and reduce the wage bill before a replacement arrives.
Among alternative targets is Benfica defender Tomas Araujo, who is reportedly available for around €35 million, but Bayern view Kounde as the more ambitious option.

Kounde’s versatility makes him attractive; he can operate as a centre‑back or right‑back, offering flexibility that could suit Vincent Kompany’s tactical approach.
Barcelona context and external interest
Despite extending his contract with Barcelona until 2030, Kounde has mostly been the backup right‑back, with Eric Garcia preferred by Hansi Flick. His playing time fell last season, yet he chose to stay at Spotify Camp Nou and fight for a larger role.
Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and AC Milan have all shown interest, and several Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation.
If Bayern secure Kounde, they would replace Kim, free up resources and add a player capable of covering multiple defensive positions. For Kounde, a January move could provide the regular minutes he seeks, while Barcelona would lose a versatile squad member.
