Bayern draws Magdeburg as opponent, Dortmund faces Werder in the classic

The DFB-Pokal draw for Bayern pits the German record champions FC Bayern Munich as defending champions against the East German traditional club 1. FC Magdeburg, while Borussia Dortmund meets Werder Bremen in the classic – both fixtures promise exciting Bundesliga duels as part of the draw.

Bayern hosts Magdeburg in the second round

The DFB-Pokal draw produced a manageable draw for FC Bayern, a real blockbuster in Dortmund. The draw for the second round of the DFB-Pokal provides the top teams of the Bundesliga with attractive fixtures and gives an overview of the upcoming matchups.

BVB faces a long‑standing opponent, as it meets Werder Bremen in a Bundesliga duel. This encounter is considered a classic between the two traditional clubs.

Bayern legend and ARD expert Bastian Schweinsteiger acted as the draw fairy and also drew the matchups between 1. FC Köln and Union Berlin, Hamburger SV and Eintracht Frankfurt, as well as SC Paderborn and VfB Stuttgart. Thus, further exciting Bundesliga duels were drawn.

Further matchups and historical peculiarities

Jeddeloh II, conqueror of the top‑division relegated side 1. FC Heidenheim and, as a Regionalliga club, the lowest‑ranked club in the draw, meets second‑division side Hertha BSC. This fixture rounds off the colourful second round.

For the first time since the 2008/09 season, all 18 clubs of the 1st Bundesliga have survived the opening round of the DFB‑Pokal. The last time this happened was in the 2008/09 season after the first round.

The final of the competition is scheduled for 29 May 2027 in Berlin. All participating teams are aiming for this final.

This will be the second comparison of the East German record cup winner (seven victories shared with Dynamo Dresden) and the Munich club (twenty‑one triumphs) in the DFB‑Pokal. In the 2000/01 season, FCM eliminated the Bayern after a penalty shoot‑out, before the Munich side later became league champions and Champions League winners.

A third round will still take place this year on 1 and 2 December. Thus, the excitement remains until the final on 29 May 2027.
