Bayern dismiss new bid for Liverpool’s £116m midfielder Wirtz
Liverpool’s German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz remains linked with Bayern Munich, but Bayern supervisory board member Karl‑Heinz Rummenigge says the club is unlikely to pursue him again, even though Liverpool paid an initial £100 million plus £16 million in add‑ons for the player.
Liverpool signed the 23‑year‑old from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025, hoping he would fill the promised No 10 role after a Bundesliga title with Bayer in 2024. The Premier League side expected the German international to replicate his creative output in England.
So far Wirtz has managed only seven goals and 11 assists in 55 matches across all competitions, a modest return that has left him short of the expectations set when he arrived.
Bayern's stance
Rummenigge, speaking for the German club, stressed that Bayern already have Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry and the emerging Ismael Saibari in similar positions, so there is “no need to buy a fourth player for the amount of money Wirtz would probably cost”. He added that chasing the midfielder is “not my job”.
Transfer fee and future plans
The total outlay for Wirtz amounts to £116 million, comprising the £100 million upfront fee and £16 million in add‑ons. TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Fraser Fletcher reported that Liverpool are not planning to sell the player any time soon, with manager Andoni Iraola keen to keep giving him opportunities to find his rhythm.
Rummenigge also admitted he was “honestly, yes” surprised by how Wirtz’s move to Liverpool has panned out, noting that “financially, there were no dramatic differences” and that the player chose Liverpool after a promise of the No 10 shirt.
With Bayern signalling no renewed chase and Liverpool insisting the £116 million star remains central to their plans, the midfielder’s future hinges on his ability to adapt and on the club’s patience in nurturing his talent.
