Bayern bend contract rule to retain Harry Kane as United chase

Bayern Munich have bent their own contract rule to keep England striker Harry Kane, says club legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, as Man Utd co‑owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid to bring the 33‑year‑old to Old Trafford fades. Kane is set to leave on a free‑transfer when his deal expires at the end of the season.

Manchester United’s pursuit

TEAMtalk’s Transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported in August that Man Utd want to sign Kane from Bayern in 2027. The co‑owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is personally keen on a deal for the former Tottenham Hotspur striker.

Graeme Bailey later reported on September 14 that Bayern believe Kane will sign a new contract, with sources saying the club aims to wrap up a deal before the New Year.

The 33‑year‑old striker told on September 18: “I’m extremely happy here. The talks are ongoing. I really appreciate the support the fans are showing me here.”

Bayern break age‑extension rule

Supervisory board member and club legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed that Bayern are breaking their rule of not offering players over 30 more than a one‑year extension to retain Kane at the Allianz Arena.

Rummenigge told Abendzeitung, as relayed by Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, “In the past I would have said that players over 30 should generally only be offered one‑year contracts, but there are exceptions when you are convinced by a player. And we are convinced by Harry.”

He added, “We mustn’t forget that he has only been injured once in three years.”

Rummenigge also backed Kane for the Ballon d’Or, noting the striker scored a total of 73 goals for Bayern and England last season – only Lionel Messi was more successful in a single year this millennium. “The answer was: Harry has a 68% probability of winning,” he said, hoping the figure materialises.
