Bayer Leverkusen Kennet Eichhorn faces uncertain future after diagnosis
On a quiet training pitch at Bayer Leverkusen, the usual buzz was replaced by a hushed concern as medical staff gathered around the young midfielder. Bayer Leverkusen Kennet Eichhorn has been ruled out until further notice after doctors diagnosed him with a metabolic disorder. The 17‑year‑old’s absence was confirmed by the club earlier today.
The disorder was uncovered during routine medical examinations. Club doctors said the diagnosis followed excessive physical strain and significant weight loss. Both issues were linked to a pre‑existing gastrointestinal condition.
Eichhorn will now undergo further assessment and treatment under specialist doctors. No timetable has been given for his return to the squad.
He earned his move to Bayer Leverkusen after a breakout season in Bundesliga 2 with Hertha Berlin. During that campaign he became the division’s youngest ever starter, player and goalscorer.
"Kennet is set to embark on what we hope will be a very long career at the very highest level," said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes. "We will support him as best we can along the way," he added.
"What's important at this stage is that we have put the right measures in place for his recovery," Rolfes continued. "Kennet is given the time, peace and quiet he needs for his treatment, without any pressure," the sporting director emphasized.

The setback highlights the challenges clubs face when fast‑tracking teenage talent into top‑flight football. Bayer Leverkusen will need to reassess its medical monitoring protocols to protect young prospects in the future.
