Baum on fire at ManUnited – How does Carrick face his exit?

After the 1-4 loss to Como in the Champions League, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is scrambling for explanations, while a small tree in the background of Lake Como symbolically represents the crisis; the few remaining fans see the stressed Carrick in the fan block.

Apology action at Lake Como

Michael Carrick marched straight to the guest stand of the small stadium at Lake Como and, apologetically, raised both arms in front of the few remaining Manchester United fans. “It is more than disappointing. I take 100 percent responsibility for the whole team and the performance,” he said after the 1-4.

United have been without a win for seven consecutive league games, and after the second defeat in the third Champions League match the pressure on the Red Devils is mounting. The BBC wrote “Job in danger”, while The Sun noted that Carrick “would see what awaited him”.

Criticism from players and media

Captain Bruno Fernandes left no criticism after the match and said that the coaching staff’s decision not to press man‑to‑man gave the opponent space. Defender Lisandro Martinez complained after the loss to Atletico that the squad was too weakly staffed, and later apologised for his comments.

Early conceding goals point to a mentality problem; already in the second minute Nico Paz put Como ahead, after Atletico Madrid had already scored in the first minute. Carrick emphasized that aggression, fighting spirit and the will to give everything were missing in the game against Leeds (1-1).

After the open confession in Como, which is being called a “confession of bankruptcy”, the unrest in the club could reach a new level. The fans at Lake Como watch anxiously to see whether Carrick continues to take responsibility or leads the team forward.

Carrick told TNT that it is not about him personally, but about processing the game and seeing how it went, and that this is the most important thing at the moment. He stressed that the responsibility for the team ends with him.
