Barcelona weigh ONE condition as Andoni Iraola eyes Bernal
Barcelona have yet to decide whether to sell 19‑year‑old Spanish midfielder Marc Bernal to Liverpool, with Reds manager Andoni Iraola reportedly keen to bring the La Masia graduate to Anfield, a move that would hinge on ONE condition – the teenager’s desire to leave.
Barcelona's internal calculus
Club officials say the final verdict on Bernal will be taken next summer, despite his contract running until the summer of 2029. He has already collected two LaLiga titles with the Catalans, but sits behind Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Rodri when they are fit. Hansi Flick must be convinced of Bernal’s importance before any permanent exit is approved.
Liverpool's pursuit and conditions
According to Spanish journalist Juan Jesus, who boasts 22,600 followers on X, Liverpool are eyeing a 2027 deal for the defensive midfielder. The Reds manager Andoni Iraola is described as an “absolute admirer” of Bernal’s profile, and has made it clear that a transfer would only proceed if the player himself pushes for it.
Bernal, a Spain international, has featured in 44 matches for Barcelona across all competitions, netting five goals and providing three assists. The 19‑year‑old progressed through La Masia before cementing a place in the first‑team squad.
Frenkie de Jong returns to Barcelona training
This season his involvement has been limited: three LaLiga starts and just 27 minutes in the Champions League. The sparse minutes underline the challenge of breaking into a midfield already packed with established stars.
Juan Jesus also noted interest from Atletico de Madrid and Manchester United, adding that Diego Simeone and the Man Utd hierarchy are “following him closely”. The journalist’s X post on 2 October at 13:30 highlighted the breadth of the teenager’s suitors.
Barcelona expect Frenkie de Jong clearance within a week
Jesus quoted Bernal as saying he wants to convince Flick, with his playing time set for review in June. He warned that if the club cannot meet his expectations, a permanent move away from Barcelona becomes “highly likely”, though the Catalans would prefer to keep him unless he requests a departure.
