Barcelona seeks Dutch wing reinforcement as Europe watches
FC Barcelona is leading LaLiga, but the club continues unabated in seeking improvement. A possible solution is the Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who barely plays for both his club and for the Netherlands, but according to Spanish transfer journalist Juan Jesus Cruz Caparrós is being seriously considered.
Why Frimpong is on the radar
Cruz Caparrós reports on X that Barcelona sees Frimpong as reinforcement for the right flank. Hansi Flick already asked for Frimpong in his first year at Barça, but technical director Deco then refused a bid from Bayer Leverkusen. Denzel Dumfries of Internazionale also did not come, while he now plays for Real Madrid.
The journalist points out that Frimpong has endured an “absolute ordeal” at Liverpool and struggles to adapt to English football, despite having spent virtually his entire youth in the English youth competitions. As a result, he barely speaks Dutch.
Obstacles and alternatives
Andoni Iraola relies more on Ronald Araújo for the right-back position, and Crysencio Summerville has recently made the right flank in the Netherlands practically untouchable. Moreover, the Uruguayan international, who is on loan from Barcelona this season at Anfield Road, plays a different role.
In Catalonia the preference initially goes to Pedro Porro of Tottenham Hotspur, but the Spanish international does not seem allowed to leave his club. Xavi consistently preferred Dumfries at right-back, with Jurriën Timber coming in as a substitute.
According to Cruz Caparrós, Frimpong would fling the door wide open for a transfer to Barcelona. Liverpool would be willing to accept a bid starting at 35 million euros; the club had paid 40 million to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025.
A possible arrival of Frimpong would present a competitor for Jules Koundé in the right-back position. The Dutch international did not play a single minute for the Netherlands national team during the last international break, meaning he does not fit into Iraola’s plans.
Liverpool fans have already expressed their approval on social media, because they see no future for Frimpong at The Reds. A transfer of at least 35 million euros to Barcelona could, according to the journalist, work wonders for both the club and the player.
