Barcelona’s vice‑president of finance Ferran Olivé explained that the club now operates under a strict 1‑1 rule, meaning any incoming player must be matched by an outgoing sale. Since joining Atlético de Madrid in 2024, Álvarez has featured in 110 matches, scoring 49 goals and providing 18 assists. In the season preceding the World Cup he netted 20 times in 49 games, including ten Champions League, eight LaLiga and two Copa del Rey goals, and contributed nine goal‑creating passes.

After the World Cup and his outspoken desire to leave for Barcelona, Álvarez lost his place in the ‘Colchonero’ line‑up, accumulating only 173 minutes across four appearances.

Hansi Flick recently confirmed that the Argentine striker is no longer among his priorities, as the German coach intends to sign a central striker rather than a forward.
