Barcelona's 50% sell‑on clause costs them a potential €10 million

🇪🇸

Oscar Mingueza will leave Celta Vigo as a free agent on 30 June, ending a four‑season spell after 147 official appearances and a €20 million Juventus bid that was rejected, meaning Barcelona’s 50 % sell‑on clause will yield no payment for the club.

Barcelona retained a 50 % future transfer fee when Oscar Mingueza moved to Celta Vigo in 2022. The clause only activates if Celta sells him before his contract ends.

In January, Juventus submitted a €20 million bid for Mingueza. Celta rejected the offer, insisting on his release clause, which would have handed Barcelona roughly €10 million under the 50 % agreement.

Mingueza featured heavily for Celta this season, logging close to 3,000 minutes across 47 matches. He contributed one goal and six assists from his defensive positions.

His contract with Celta expires on 30 June, turning him into a free agent. Celta chose not to renew him, ending his four‑year stay.

As a free player, Mingueza attracts interest from clubs in Italy, England and Turkey. The market attention underscores his versatility as a centre‑back or wing‑back.

The episode shows that retained percentages only generate revenue when the selling club completes a transfer. For Barcelona, the lost €10 million is a reminder that every euro matters in their finances.
