Barcelona’s €22 million gamble on pace‑driven Karim Adeyemi

Barcelona’s €22 million gamble on pace‑driven Karim Adeyemi

Barcelona will unveil German forward Karim Adeyemi on Thursday, July 23, as its €22 million signing, while Borussia Dortmund finalises paperwork that secures a future sell‑on clause and immediate fee, highlighting opposite ends of the same transfer and underscoring each club’s distinct priorities for the upcoming season.

The announcement, reported by SPORT, will mark Barcelona’s latest high‑profile acquisition ahead of the new season after a week‑long medical clearance process. The club confirmed the €22 million fee will be paid upfront, with an additional €7 million in performance‑related bonuses.

Adeyemi has been at Barcelona since last Wednesday, having passed his medical the following day. Only the transfer documents between Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund remain to formalise the move.

Hansi Flick, who worked with Adeyemi in the German national team, praised the forward’s pace, dribbling and willingness to attack space as a perfect fit for Barcelona’s attack. He also stressed that Adeyemi will be essential for the pre‑season camp in England, where the squad will train abroad.

Borussia Dortmund will retain a percentage of any future profit from a potential sale of Adeyemi, ensuring a long‑term financial interest. The deal has been fully agreed for several days, confirming both clubs’ commitment.

Super‑agent Jorge Mendes facilitated the swift conclusion of negotiations, accelerating the agreement between the two clubs in recent weeks. His involvement helped bridge the parties’ positions and secure the final terms.

Club president Joan Laporta initially suggested the presentation could occur on Wednesday, but the ceremony was postponed to Thursday while paperwork was finalised. He described the delay as routine administrative processing, with no sporting or financial issues.

Since arriving, Adeyemi has followed an individual fitness programme that combines gym work with personal training sessions at Barcelona’s Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper. He aims to join the squad immediately after the announcement and be fully available for the pre‑season training camp in England.

The contrast shows Barcelona gaining a pace‑driven striker to boost its attack, while Dortmund secures an immediate €22 million fee, potential bonuses and a future sell‑on clause, completing one of its most anticipated summer moves. Both clubs therefore fulfil divergent objectives through the same transaction.
