Barcelona Romero hopes hinge on defender exit, says Romano

Eight Barcelona players lifted the World Cup in New Jersey on Sunday, prompting FC Barcelona to keep defender Cristian Romero on their transfer list only if a single condition set by Fabrizio Romano is met, as the club eyes a defensive overhaul ahead of the summer window.

Barcelona will retain Romero on its list of defensive targets only if one of the current centre‑backs departs. The condition was outlined by Fabrizio Romano.

Romero is expected to leave Tottenham this summer. Inter Milan are reportedly working on a deal and have held direct talks with his representatives.

Barça are not in an active race to sign Romero, and no negotiations with Tottenham have begun. The club is monitoring the situation, ready to act if Hansi Flick’s defensive options shift during the window.

Romero would bring obvious experience and aggression, having played at the highest level in the Premier League. His World Cup winner status aligns with Flick’s demanding approach and could suit Barcelona’s defensive philosophy.

Central defence appears to be an area Barcelona could address, with a potential move for Spanish defender Aymeric Laporte on the cards. Laporte, a former Manchester City and England international, would add size and experience to the back line.

Barcelona already have several centre‑back options including Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Gerard Martin and academy prospect Alvaro Cortés. Ronald Araujo’s exit could open the door for Romero, although he is the only likely candidate to depart and chances appear slim.

If no significant defender leaves, Romero will likely remain merely a name on the club’s list. It remains to be seen how Barcelona’s defensive planning evolves before the end of the summer transfer window, as clubs balance squad depth with financial prudence.
