Barcelona choose Gordon over Rashford as Flick seeks intensity
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has explained why the Catalans signed Anthony Gordon instead of Marcus Rashford this summer, opting to pay Newcastle £69m after turning down a £26m option to make Rashford’s loan from Manchester United permanent. The decision reflects the club’s strategic shift towards greater intensity.
Rashford’s loan option
The Catalans held an option to make Rashford’s loan move from Manchester United permanent for just £26m after the 28‑year‑old recorded 14 goals and 15 assists in all competitions. Despite the modest fee, they chose a different route.
Gordon fits Flick’s vision
Instead, Barcelona paid Newcastle £69m for Gordon, who has already delivered five assists in his opening four La Liga games. Fans celebrated his arrival by chanting his name during the 5‑2 victory over Rayo Vallecano at the Nou Camp.
"We are extremely grateful to Rashford, who contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony because his style fits what coach Hansi Flick wants," Deco said. Deco added that the club’s scouting identified Gordon as the player to deliver the required intensity.
Raphinha locks in long‑term deal as Barcelona look to 2030
Deco explained that without Raphinha the team’s energy dropped last season, leaving a need for more intensity. He said the club analysed many wingers and, although signing a Premier League player is almost impossible, Flick’s clear brief guided the £69m deal.
Gordon joins five other summer arrivals – Rodri from Manchester City, João Cancelo from Al Hilal, Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund, Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal and Dominik Livaković from Fenerbahçe. These acquisitions form a core group aimed at revitalising Barcelona’s attack.
Barcelona also pursued Bernardo Silva, but he ultimately signed for arch‑rivals Real Madrid. Deco revealed the club could not meet certain parameters, citing playing‑time concerns as well as financial considerations.
"He wanted to come to Barça, but things didn’t move forward because we have certain parameters," Deco said. "It’s not up to me to decide if he will play; that’s the coach’s decision, and he preferred regular minutes at City."
