Ballon d’Or conflict forces Paris Saint-Germain to a Monday match

Paris Saint-Germain must play against Olympique Lyon on Monday evening at the Parc des Princes, while in London the Ballon d’Or ceremony takes place that same evening. Due to the postponed match, caused by security risks, the nominated players of the Champions League winner risk having to miss the gala award ceremony.

Security reasons force postponement

The match was originally scheduled for Sunday evening, but the Paris police asked the Ligue 1 organization LFP for a postponement. Authorities fear a heavy strain on security services, partly due to expected demonstrations after earlier riots and looting.

On the same Sunday, the Stade de France is hosting an NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints, which also requires a large police presence. This large‑scale event is harder to relocate than a Ligue 1 duel.

The shift brings a new problem: the Ballon d’Or gala is being held on Monday evening in London. Players who have to play against Lyon therefore find it difficult to attend both the match and the ceremony.

Paris Saint-Germain has ten players out of the thirty nominated for the individual award. PSG now has to prepare for a potentially smaller delegation to London, but a final list is not yet known.

This is not the first time PSG has faced this clash. Last year, the away match against Olympique Marseille fell on the gala evening, where Ousmane Dembélé could collect his Ballon d’Or in person because he was injured, while his teammates lost 1‑0.
