Balerdi returns to glory in Italy thanks to Roma
Under Rome's grey sky, Leonardo Balerdi, freshly arrived from Olympique de Marseille, whips the ball along the edge of Torino's pitch, reminding everyone that his new start in Italy is only beginning and that the criticism that had followed him for two years already seems far away.
After leaving Olympique de Marseille through a very small door, Leonardo Balerdi did not imagine regaining form so quickly. Loaned to AS Roma with an obligation to buy, he lives again in Rome, the Eternal City.
Decisive Starting Role at Torino
His first appearance off the bench against Atalanta (2-1) was considered very interesting. On Monday, he started in the lineup for Roma on Torino's ground, which ended in a 2-0 victory.
This success gave the Giallorossi their fourth consecutive win and placed them at the top of Serie A, delivering the first points of the former Marseille gamble.
Coach Gian Piero Gasperini compared Balerdi to a great Italian defender.
"Who does he remind me of? He is certainly a powerful, modern, and fast defender," Gasperini enthused. "I cannot name any current phenomenal players, but his way of interpreting his role reminds me of Franco Baresi. He was the undisputed number one, obviously, but the characteristics are the same."
Balerdi's rebound in Italy shows that a difficult start can quickly turn into success when a player finds the right environment. His progression could inspire other players seeking renewal after criticized spells.
