AZ's Italian pursuit stalls as Inzaghi blocks Ranocchia bid
AZ have lodged a serious offer for 25‑year‑old midfielder Filippo Ranocchia, but Palermo coach Filippo Inzaghi has rejected the proposal, insisting the player stays at the club. The move marks AZ’s first high‑profile attempt to sign a player from Italy’s Serie B.
Tuttomercatoweb reported that the Dutch side’s bid was aimed at the Serie B cult club Palermo, where Ranocchia currently plays. The offer was described as “serious” by the source.
Palermo‑trainer Filippo Inzaghi said he wants to keep Ranocchia “costs what it costs”, effectively pulling the deal from the table. Inzaghi views the midfielder as a crucial component of his squad.
The former top‑flight striker considers the 1.86‑metre, two‑footed central midfielder essential for Palermo’s ambitions. He hopes to retain the player at any price.
Ranocchia’s contract runs until mid‑2028 and Transfermarkt values him at €4 million. He scored six goals in the last Serie B season, helping Palermo finish fourth before missing promotion in the playoffs.
Before joining Palermo, Ranocchia featured for Empoli, Monza and Juventus, adding experience from higher tiers. His career path includes spells at three notable Italian clubs.
AZ’s interest may be linked to the situation of Peer Koopmeiners, who is currently pursued by Club Brugge, the Belgian side that recently tabled a €13 million offer. AZ have so far refused to let Koopmeiners leave, and the transfer window remains open for another month, leaving Palermo’s resolve to be tested.
