AZ eyes rapid revival by re‑signing former prodigy Stengs

AZ are moving quickly to fill the void left by the departure of their attacking midfielder, as 27‑year‑old Calvin Stengs, a former youth graduate, has been medically cleared and is available on a free transfer after Feyenoord terminated his contract earlier this week.

Vandaag, De Telegraaf reported that the Noord-Hollanders have expressed a strong desire to bring the versatile midfielder‑and‑right‑winger back into the squad.

Stengs previously featured for AZ between 2017 and 2021, progressing from the academy to the first team before moving on.

During his three seasons at Feyenoord he won the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield in his debut season, scoring eight goals and providing seventeen assists.

His time at Feyenoord was later hampered by injuries, including a setback that cancelled a loan spell at Pisa.

After a brief, unproductive stint at OGC Nice for €17 million, a loan at Royal Antwerp yielded a Belgian double, which facilitated his move to Feyenoord.

The trio that once included Stengs, Myron Boadu and Owen Wijndal generated €40 million in revenue for AZ, underscoring the club’s willingness to reunite with the former ‘three musketeers’.

AZ have already completed a secret medical examination for Stengs, and De Telegraaf reports his return is ‘highly likely’, pending final paperwork.
