Austria U21 celebrates a crushing win, yet misses Euro spot
On Tuesday the Austrian U21 team beat Wales in Caernarfon 7-1, but despite this thrashing the side remained in third place in Group I and missed Austria's U21 European Championship qualification. Four days earlier the team had played a 1-1 draw against Denmark in Vienna, meaning a win against Wales could have secured the point and three goals for the play-off qualification.
After just three minutes and a nice one-two with Erik Kojzek, Luca Weinhandl made it 0-1. Two minutes later Jacob Hödl increased the lead to 0-2 after a pass from Nicolas Bajlicz. An own goal by Calum Agius put Wales on 1-2, before David Puczka made it 3-1 in the 41st minute.
Successful Finish, but No Euro Spot
In the second half, Oluwaseun Adewumi made it 4-1 in the 56th minute after a deflected shot from Nikolaus Wurmbrand. An own goal by Noah Anyadike made it 5-1 in the 71st minute, while Erik Kojzek converted a penalty to make it 6-1 in the 84th minute. Jannik Schuster completed the score with the seventh goal in the 86th minute, a strike that could have paved the way into the play-off qualification race.
Coach Peter Perchtold used the match to initiate the upcoming generational change. He placed Oluwaseun Adewumi on the right wing and gave Erik Kojzek preference in attack over Furkan Dursun. The lineup reflected the desire to continue developing young talents such as the attacking talent Puczka.
Qualification Record and Consequence
With 14 points from eight games Austria remained in third place in Group I, while Denmark, thanks to a 0-0 draw against Belgium, had one point more and a better goal difference. The 0-2 defeat to Wales in October 2025 was the decisive setback that widened the gap to the play-off places. Even a win with three additional goals against Wales would not have secured qualification, because Denmark retained the point.
Four days later the 1-1 draw against Denmark felt even more frustrating, as the team, after a deserved win at the Sport-Club ground, had missed the chance for a play-off ticket in Wales. After an early Danish goal the score remained unchanged until the end, highlighting the need for a clear victory over Wales.
The match took place at the Carling Oval in Caernarfon and was staged as the final matchday of the UEFA U21 European Championship qualification, Group I. The line‑ups showed Austria with Lukas Jungwirth in goal, while Wales started with Duncan in goal. Yellow cards were shown to Noah Anyadike and Luca Weinhandl.
